Do Your Part and Help Those In Need By Donating Your Clothing
During the holiday season you may see many charity foundations asking for clothing donations, or donations of toys for children. There are many reasons why you should take advantage of these options, as it not only helps those in need, but it can help you as well.
Many of us have clothing items that we seldom use, or haven’t worn in a long time. These articles of clothing serve only to clog our closet and storage space, while we put off sorting though it until later. When you donate clothes you not only help those who have a need for them, but you also help free up cluttered space in your own home. Additionally, donating to certain organizations, can allow you specific tax breaks; depending on the value of charitable donations, and that you donated. Usually a donation worth $250 in household and clothing items can heed a break, granted you are able to provide the receipts proving the donation.
Donating clothing also helps keep synthetic fabrics out of landfills. Clothing that is manufactured with non-organic materials can sit in landfills for years without decaying, contributing to an overabundance of waste materials polluting the earth. In 2006 alone around 2.5 billion pounds of textile fabrics were kept out of landfills due to donations and thrift purchases. However, 10.5 million tons of clothing still find there way to landfills each year. Progress can be made, and donating is one amazing way to make a difference.
There are more and more people in the United States who struggle below the poverty line, and those of us who can, have an obligation to help anyway we can. The easiest way to do this is by donating clothing, home goods, or even our time. Often the smallest things can have the largest impact on someone who desperately needs it.
Thrift stores and charity foundations around the country function on the donations of those who are able to give, and whether your donating directly to a store, to a shelter, or to a drop off location, you can rest assured that your charity will help someone in need.
Take a few minutes to think about the clothing and home goods you have around you home that you could give up to someone who needs it. If you have children, consider the clothing they’ve outgrown, and think of the children who could use them now. You can make a difference in the lives of some in need, in the environment, and in your own home. Look into one of the charity foundations near you and see if they provide donation pick ups. With that option you don’t even have to worry about transporting bags and boxes, you can do good without even leaving your home.
